Atari has acquired the "complete and exclusive rights" to the first five games in the original Wizardry RPG series, including related intellectual property from the original rights holder.
Atari has acquired the rights to the first five games in the Wizardry RPG series, with Japanese publisher Drecom retaining ownership of Wizardry 6, 7, and 8, set in a different fictional universe. Drecom clarified that it will keep the Wizardry trademark globally and has no plans to sell the trademark or other rights to future Wizardry titles. The acquisition includes additional Wizardry-related video games, contract rights, and associated intellectual property.
Atari aims to expand distribution through remasters, collections, and new releases, along with developing card and board games, books, comics, and TV and film projects based on the original games. The company's Digital Eclipse previously remade Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord in 2024. Atari's CEO Wade Rosen expressed excitement about republishing and remastering the games, bringing them to new audiences.
