Research suggests exercise games like Ring Fit Adventure could treat early stages of depression.
New research indicates that exercise games, known as 'exergames,' such as Nintendo's Ring Fit Adventure, could assist individuals in coping with initial phases of depression. A study supported by China's Jilin Association of Higher Education explored the potential of these video games in addressing 'subthreshold depression,' a condition where individuals exhibit depressive symptoms without meeting the criteria for major depressive disorder. The research involved 84 adults with subthreshold depression, divided into two groups to play Ring Fit Adventure regularly or continue with their routine activities. The results showed that participants engaging in exergaming experienced notable reductions in depressive symptoms, anxiety levels, and sleep quality, highlighting the positive impact of a Nintendo Switch-based exergaming intervention on mental health support.
