Sales of Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan dropped by 87% following a surge before the May 25 price increase.
Nintendo Switch 2 sales in Japan plummeted by 87% to 31,751 units after a surge prior to the May 25 price hike. The three weeks leading to May 25 saw Switch 2 sales exceeding 200,000 units weekly, driven by reports of the impending price increase. Before the announcement, weekly sales ranged from 44,000 to 52,000 units.
On May 25, the price of the Japanese-language Switch 2 system increased from ¥49,980 ($312) to ¥59,980 ($374), while the multilanguage system's cost remained the same. The original Switch also saw a price rise on the same day, from ¥32,978 to ¥43,980. In the six weeks before the increase, original Switch sales were between 3,000 to 8,000 units weekly, dropping to 229 units last week.
Aside from Japan, Switch 2 system prices will be adjusted in the US, Canada, and Europe from September 1, 2026. Nintendo attributed the price increase to current market conditions and rising component costs.
