UKIE Welcomes Video Games Distinction from Social Media Amid UK

UKIE welcomes UK government's decision to classify video games separately from social media as a ban on the latter for under-16s is set to be introduced.

UK video games trade body UKIE has expressed support for the government's move to distinguish video games from social media. The organization's CEO, Nick Poole, highlighted the industry's efforts to safeguard young users from inappropriate content. Poole emphasized the sector's alignment with the government's online safety objectives.

The UK government recently unveiled plans for a social media ban for under-16s, aiming to restrict access to platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube. These measures, inspired by Australia's similar ban, include stringent controls on harmful functions, applicable even to 'gaming sites.' UKIE clarified that these restrictions do not encompass video games.

Additionally, the government intends to activate specific restrictions by default for individuals under 17 to prevent abrupt exposure to online risks. Prime Minister Keir Starmer underscored the importance of enhancing child safety in the digital age, emphasizing the need for comprehensive protections and a proactive approach towards safeguarding young users.
