CEO Richard Stitselaar attributes closure to ongoing challenges in the VR industry.
Vertigo Games, a VR developer, has announced the closure of its Amsterdam studio due to challenges in the VR industry. CEO Richard Stitselaar expressed gratitude to the studio team for their hard work and dedication. The company is focused on supporting the affected employees during this transition. Vertigo Games was originally known as Force Field Entertainment before being acquired by Vertigo Games in 2021. Koch Media, a subsidiary of the Embracer Group, acquired Vertigo Games in 2020 for €50 million. Recently, Vertigo Games released titles like Metro Awakening, The 7th Guest Remake, and Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow. The closure of Vertigo Games Amsterdam reflects broader challenges in the VR sector, with other companies like Rec Room and Polyarc Games also facing difficulties.
GamesIndustry.biz has sought clarification from Vertigo Games regarding the status of its Rotterdam studio and other offices in the Netherlands and Los Angeles. Meta, formerly known as Koch Media and now as Plaion, has also made changes within its Reality Labs division, including reducing its workforce by 10% and implementing layoffs across various departments.
