UWOTC-CWA, representing Magic: The Gathering devs, requested that management recognize the union by May 1.
Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro have failed to meet the deadline for voluntarily recognizing a union formed by Magic: The Gathering Arena developers. UWOTC-CWA, with the backing of the Communication Workers of America, had asked for the union's recognition by May 1.
The union expressed disappointment over the lack of a direct response from the companies after the May 1 deadline passed. Management had previously stated commitment to hearing and supporting every individual but only engaged with the press when the unionization desire was voiced.
UWOTC-CWA highlighted that despite the delay, they are resolute about the union's success, buoyed by support from various stakeholders like players, influencers, and content creators. The union urged continued pressure on WOTC and Hasbro to recognize the union before an upcoming election.
The union's original letter to management raised concerns about layoff protections, remote work policies, generative AI, mandatory overtime, and the importance of enhanced transparency and equity.
